What's it really like?

It's slowed down a bit now, but any single woman living in NYC within the past few years has been confronted with this question "Is it like Sex & the City"? It was a running joke, but at least better than "Where were you Sept 11th?"

For the most part, the joke involved us laughing at the ridiculous notion that are lives were similar to those speed-dating women with unlimited incomes. Don't get me wrong, I loved the show. It was well-written and the women dressed well (it's TV after all).

Now that that topic has died down, I'd like to revisit my answer.

Yes, yes in fact it is just like Sex & the City.

The ridiculous myths aside:
  • No, I don't know anyone living in a rent-controlled Manhattan apartment (they do exist, I have been told).
  • No one I know wears $500 shoes daily.

But the rest is true:
  • NYC draws a certain type of person. Everyone I know is fascinating. They have exciting jobs (even if they are jobs) and some place they are striving to be. I know talented artists, writers, musicians, thinkers, producer, actors. ALL genuinely talented and constantly striving to reach their goals in these areas. (aka the people are FABULOUS)
  • As a result of these careers and interests, they are constantly hosting, participating in, and invited to amazing events. Six degrees of separation in this city will expose you to parties, plays, music, art, and places you would never experience otherwise. Just supporting your friends and their interests makes for a spectacular calendar of events.
  • Because we're all running around with our fabulous selves to these exciting events, there's an inherent style that gets adopted. None of have the budget or wardrobe staff of the TV show, but we all look amazing.
Let's face it, New York's a damned cool city ... otherwise they wouldn't make movies and TV shows about it. The key ingredient making it so cool are the people who inhabit it.

You can find anything in this city. Finding someone, remarkabley, is a bit harder. But the searching makes for good stories.
